A BINATIONAL COLLABORATION
Boquillas Morning Float is a collaborative experience between Big Bend Boating and Hiking Company and Boquillas Adventures, designed to connect visitors from the Big Bend region with the Rio Grande, the community of Boquillas del Carmen, and the landscapes on both sides of the international border.
The experience begins in Terlingua, Texas, where a professional guide from Big Bend Boating and Hiking Company (BBBHC) meets the group and accompanies them throughout the journey into the Big Bend region and toward the international border.
The BBBHC guide is an important part of the experience, providing interpretation of the landscape, geology, desert ecology, wildlife, history, and the unique relationship between the Rio Grande and the communities of the Big Bend borderlands.
FROM TERLINGUA TO THE RIO GRANDE
The journey itself is part of the experience.
As the group travels from Terlingua through Big Bend National Park, the BBBHC guide provides interpretation and context, helping visitors understand the extraordinary desert landscape surrounding the Rio Grande.
The guide remains with the group as they travel toward Boquillas del Carmen, helping create a seamless connection between the American and Mexican sides of this unique border region.
ARRIVING IN BOQUILLAS DEL CARMEN
Upon arrival in Boquillas del Carmen, Coahuila, the Mexican guiding team from Boquillas Adventures takes over the operation of the experience.
Boquillas Adventures’ professional river guides and local community guides welcome the group and lead the Mexican portion of the journey.
This transition is an essential part of the collaborative concept: the visitor is introduced to the region from the Big Bend side by a BBBHC guide and then experiences Boquillas and the Rio Grande from the perspective of Mexican professional and local guides.
THE RIO GRANDE EXPERIENCE
Boquillas Adventures operates the river portion of the experience, including the safety orientation, river briefing, equipment, and guided float in canoes on the Rio Grande.
Guests experience the river as both a natural landscape and a living border corridor, surrounded by the desert scenery of the Big Bend region.
Professional river guides remain responsible for the group during the Mexican river experience, providing natural and cultural interpretation while maintaining appropriate river safety and group management.
BOQUILLAS DEL CARMEN
Following the river experience, guests have an opportunity to experience Boquillas del Carmen and meet members of the local community.
The visit includes time to walk through the village, learn about the community’s relationship with the Rio Grande, and explore local handicrafts and shops.
Local Boquillas guides are part of the operating team, providing a firsthand perspective. Shopping in the community is also an opportunity to directly support local families and small businesses.
TWO COMPANIES • ONE EXPERIENCE
This collaboration combines the strengths and local knowledge of two professional organizations operating on opposite sides of the Rio Grande.
Big Bend Boating and Hiking Company provides the initial visitor experience from Terlingua, including transportation, professional guiding, and interpretation of the Big Bend landscape.
Boquillas Adventures provides the Mexican-side operation, including professional river guides, local community guides, river equipment, safety management, transportation within the planned experience, the Boquillas community visit, and the locally prepared lunch.
Together, both companies create a continuous experience that begins in Terlingua and extends across the border into Boquillas del Carmen.

This is more than a river trip and more than a visit to a Mexican border village.
It is an opportunity to experience the Rio Grande as a connecting landscape—a river that links desert ecosystems, protected natural areas, communities, cultures, and histories on both sides of the international boundary.

DETAILED PROGRAM
8:00 AM — Departure from Terlingua
Meet at the Big Bend Boating and Hiking Company at the company’s offices in Terlingua.
After a brief orientation, the group departs toward the Boquillas International Crossing.
The BBBHC guide accompanies the group throughout the drive, interpreting the landscapes of the Big Bend region, including the desert environment, geology, wildlife, history, and the Rio Grande borderlands.
The drive is not simply transportation—it is the first part of the experience.

9:00 AM (aprox) — Arrival at the International Crossing, Boquillas Port of Entry.
Arrive at the international crossing and preparation to enter Mexico.
Once the group has completed the crossing, the Boquillas Adventures Mexican guiding team welcomes the guests and assumes responsibility for the Mexican portion of the experience. (ferry and Conanp fee pay by visitors, or we can include this, please let me know, 5 dollars for the ferry and 8 for conanp)
The BBBHC guide remains part of the group through the transition, helping create a seamless binational experience.

9:15 AM ARRIVAL IN BOQUILLAS DEL CARMEN
Welcome to Boquillas del Carmen, Coahuila.
The group meets the Boquillas Adventures river guides and local community guides and receives a short orientation before beginning the river portion of the experience.
This is where the adventure changes perspective—from the Big Bend side of the Rio Grande to the Mexican side.

9:30 AM  RIO GRANDE CANOE EXPERIENCE
Begin the guided canoe journey on the Rio Grande.
Before launching, the Boquillas Adventures guides provide:
•    River and safety orientation
•    PFD/life-jacket fitting
•    Paddling instructions
•    Information about river conditions
•    Introduction to the surrounding landscape
Guests then enter the canoes and begin a relaxed morning journey along the river.
The experience is designed for visitors who want to enjoy the Rio Grande at an accessible pace while discovering the desert landscape from the water.
Along the way, the guides interpret the natural environment and the unique relationship between the river, the desert, and the communities on both sides of the international border.
No previous canoeing experience is required.
The exact river route and duration may vary according to water conditions, weather, and operational considerations.
After completing the canoe journey, the group arrives at the designated take-out area.
The canoes and river equipment are secured while guests have an opportunity to relax, change into dry clothing if necessary, and enjoy lunch.

AUTHENTIC LOCAL LUNCH  SERVED AT THE TAKE-OUT
An authentic locally prepared lunch is served at the take-out.
The meal is intentionally part of the cultural experience rather than simply a stop for food.
Guests can relax after the river journey, enjoy local flavors, and spend time with the guides while learning more about Boquillas and life along the Rio Grande.

AFTER LUNCH SHORT WALK THROUGH BOQUILLAS
After lunch, the group return to town in the pick ups. Then arriving to Boquillas they will take a short walk through the community.
The walk provides an introduction to the village, its relationship with the river, and the daily life of the people who live here.
The local Boquillas guides add their own perspective and stories, giving visitors an opportunity to experience the community beyond the river.

FREE TIME IN BOQUILLAS
guests have free time to enjoy Boquillas at their own pace.
Depending on their interests, guests may:
SHOP FOR LOCAL HANDCRAFTS
Explore the small shops and stalls offering locally made handicrafts, artwork, souvenirs, and other products from the community.
Responsible shopping provides a direct way for visitors to support local families and small businesses.
ENJOY A LOCAL BEER
For guests who would like to relax after the river trip, there is time to enjoy a cold beer at one of the local establishments.
VISIT THE LOCAL CANTINA
Guests may also stop at the local cantina for a drink and experience one of the traditional social spaces of the village.
For those who wish, this can include a shot of tequila—a simple and informal way to celebrate the completion of the river journey.
Alcohol consumption is optional and entirely at the guest’s discretion.

EARLY AFTERNOON — REGROUPING
After free time in the village, the group meets back with the Boquillas Adventures guides.
A final check is made to ensure that everyone has their personal belongings and is ready to return to the international crossing.
The guides accompany the group back toward the crossing.

​RETURN TO THE INTERNATIONAL CROSSING
The experience concludes at the Boquillas International Crossing, where guests begin the process of returning to the United States.
The Boquillas Adventures team concludes the Mexican-side operation at the crossing.

From Terlingua, the BBBHC guide introduces guests to the Big Bend landscape and accompanies them toward the border.
Once in Mexico, Boquillas Adventures’ professional river guides and local community guides take over, providing the river experience, local lunch, community walk, and free time in Boquillas.
The result is a continuous journey in which two professional guiding teams and two sides of the border come together around one river.
